Expecting a good result from the U-17 Women’s Team: Bhaichung Bhutia

Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia has heaped praise on the Indian Women’s football team and expects a solid performance from the players in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The former Blue Tigers captain called the tournament a ‘good start for women's football in India’ during the live chat with (All India Football Federation) AIFF TV.
“For us, it is a big step. I am expecting a good result from the U-17 women's team. Even if it is not, it is a good start for women's football in India. In Asia, a lot of countries don't have women's teams playing under-17. Chances of women qualifying for Asian Championship as compared to men is much better,” Bhaichung explained.

Apart from hosting the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup next year, India have also been awarded the right to host the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Finals. The 43-year-old also appreciated the steps taken by India’s Football governing body for winning the right to organize age category tournaments.
“It is a big step taken by the AIFF. It is important for us to host such age category tournaments. That is when we focus on grassroots. Women's football, compared to men's, has been doing well in terms of ranking,”the two-time AIFF Player of the Year elaborated.
Bhaichung however had a word of caution against complacency for the girls who are vying for a place in the final squad next year.
“The best thing about playing football is that you only have to focus on the next game. People don't remember what happened in your last game. If you scored a hat-trick and think you don't need to train, you will play badly in the next game and people won't remember you. Football is the best teacher in life.”
